　世界中1億人近くの華僑、華人をも植民地化するように、現代の中国は(アート界においてもなお)文化的国威を宣揚しています。「中国現代アート」という括りでは語りきれないはずの在外チャイニーズ特有のアイデンティティを見つけるために、彼らの作品を一堂に集めてみることにしました。今回は、最長14年の日本在住経験を持つ若手アーティスト7名をとりあげます。会場内は映像、オブジェ、ロボット、参加型メディアアートとインスタレーションを含むダイナミックな展示になります。また、彼らの感性をより身近に触れられるようにレセプションパーティとディスカッションをご用意しております。ぜひお誘い合わせの上お越しください。

展覧会に寄せて
「中華を料理するアート」林 ケイタ(映像作家)

　近年、中国現代美術が注目されています。さまざまな国際関係において政治経済的に話題の事欠かないこの国、その感性や表現の現代性に関心が持たれるのは時代の必然だと思われます。しかし、本土以外に居住しているチャイニーズ（華僑・華人）アーティストに焦点をあてた話題はそれほどありません。それぞれの居住地域の文化から影響をうけた彼らは、「中国現代美術」というくくりでは語りきれない、実に異なる性質を持っているはずです。

　本展「料理中華」は日本という地に渡り、在住経験が長く、言葉や習慣の壁を克服した７人のチャイニーズ・アーティストを取り上げます。日本にたどり着いた遊牧的な彼らは、日本人とは確実に異なる外部でありながら、そして同時に、内部でもある特殊な感覚を持ち合わせています。中国現代美術の一端に見えるような、ステレオタイプでわかりやすい「中国」的表現を背負っていないようにも見えます。

　ならば一体、彼らの表現から何が掴めるのでしょうか？長らく日本に馴染んだゆえの日本的感性や思考？それともやはり、帰属意識によって生まれる中華民族特有のエスニックな表現？またあるいは、そのどちらでもない未分化で混沌とした、得体の知れないモノなのでしょうか？

　料理とは「食物を調理する」以外に「物事をうまく処理する」という意味も持つそうです。中華という概念は、表現を通じて、果たしてどのように調理され、うまく処理されるのでしょうか？「中国現代美術」ならぬ「チャイニーズ・アート」という新しい可能性を、私たちは発見することになるでしょう。

What has been termed ‘Chinese modern art’ has entered the spotlight in recent years. This is a concomitant of the international attention given to the political and economic news emanating from continental China. Such exposure has raised the international community’s interest in the sensibilities and modes of expression employed by contemporary Chinese artists. However, while the work of mainland Chinese modern artists has been the focus of much attention, the work of overseas Chinese modern artists has received comparatively little notice. This slanting of the spotlight towards mainland Chinese modern art calls into question the term ‘Chinese modern art’ as usually defined, as it risks overlooking the work of overseas Chinese modern artists, whose perspectives are informed by interaction with host cultures.

This exhibition, entitled ‘料理中華‘ (Cooking Chinese), displays the work of seven overseas Chinese artists living in Japan. Prior to settling long-term in this country, all undertook periods of travel. Now, as long-term residents here, they have experienced the challenges of engaging a second language-culture different from their first, and consequently understand what it is to feel, paradoxically, both ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ in Japan simultaneously. As a result of their experiences, the work of these Chinese artists does not fall neatly into the category of ‘Chinese modern art’ as it is commonly understood.

This leads to the question, ‘What is it that we find in these works of overseas Chinese artists living in Japan? Is it Japanese sensibilities and thought patterns? Is it something akin to the conventional understanding of what constitutes ‘Chinese modern art’: an expression of Chinese ethnicity rooted in a distinct Chinese identity? Or is there, perhaps, something different here: something which cannot be easily categorized; something which calls for a redefining of the conventional, continental-centered conception of ‘Chinese modern art’? This last is the artists’ apparent intention, as indicated by the title of the exhibition: the Chinese word ‘料理‘, meaning ‘to cook / cooking’, also means ‘to deal with’. Through the work shown here, the artists seek to ‘cook’ the concept of ‘Chinese’ so as to deal with it.

「ターンテーブル・ディスカッション」

出展作家7名と来場者がターンテーブルを囲い、飲茶しながら 「チャイニーズ・アーティストのアイデンティティ」をテーマにディスカッション。カナダと中継して行われる予定。
